Petition for International Action on Togo’s Democratic Crisis
Africa Eye, on behalf of African youth and democratic advocates, has formally petitioned the President of the United States to draw urgent attention to the prolonged democratic and human-rights crisis in Togo.
For nearly six decades, political power in Togo has remained under the Gnassingbé dynasty, suppressing democratic choice, silencing dissent, and entrenching authoritarian rule. Peaceful protests continue to be met with intimidation, arrests, and violence, while recent constitutional changes in 2024 are widely viewed as a constitutional coup designed to perpetuate indefinite rule.
Africa Eye expresses deep concern over Togo’s admission into the Commonwealth despite clear violations of democratic principles, rule of law, and accountable governance. The organization also highlights the systematic militarization and loyalty-building within the armed forces to sustain the regime.
With regional bodies such as ECOWAS and the African Union failing to act decisively, Africa Eye calls for principled international engagement in defence of democracy, constitutionalism, and human rights.
Africa Eye remains committed to exposing authoritarianism and amplifying the voices of oppressed African citizens.
